Old West Harvest Fest – October 23-25, 2009

As we prepare for the Harvest Fest, my mind skips back to the history lessons learned as a child concerning Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims and the first Americans who shared their food supplies.  Then to the 1850s, where our stage is set for celebration of the cultural connections between Indians and Spanish and Pioneers.

We are having PUMPKINS – painting for the young ones, carving for the older ones.  PUMPKINS come to us from Native American cultivation and are eons old, useful in many ways, colorful and delicious.  HAY RIDES spring from bringing  cut hay from the fields to the barns and the field hands riding on the wagon.  As the wagon pulls, riders often break out into song.  Cooking and storytelling around CAMPFIRES is a much old custom than 1850s, however quiet camraderie and congenial conversation seems to be required from deep within.Family2008JPG

As a child, I loved to go into the attic of an auntie and find clothing from 50 years past, sometimes even 100 years.  DRESSING IN 1850s COSTUMES is fun no matter how old you are.  It is fairly easy to find inexpensive accessories and even the basics.  You can sew a costume as did the grandmother of two girls last year.  Prairie girl costumes.  You can find cowboy hats and vests and bandanas – do you have jeans in your closet?  How about a schoolmarm, lady rancher, priest, vaquero, brave warrior, gambler, saloon girl, soldier, miner, barber or cook?

Playing dress-up is FUN for all ages!

In California in the 1850s gold had just been discovered, the Spanish haciendas were being disbanded, Native Americans pushed to reservations, population exploding with pioneers and farmers.  There was much adventure and much tragedy.  It was a dramatic time of change.

Let us celebrate our Old West Harvest Fest today by remembering our ancestors as the hardy survivors they were, and by giving thanks for our lives today.  And let us all play like pioneers!

Writing Day at Sacred Rocks Reserve

paper & pen

paper & pen

Does it seem like you never have enough time in the chaos of your days to get your writing into being? Do you find yourself thinking about it but not doing it? Are there many interruptions that sidetrack you away from your writing? Do you see the days passing quickly and fear that perhaps your life will pass and you have not written what is in your heart to write?

Is there a way you truly can carve out space and time to think and to dream and to write? Would you dare take this time for yourself?

What could be possible IF you spent a day or two away, in the beautiful setting of Sacred Rocks Reserve, and put all your focus on your writing?

You are invited to COME and WRITE, for the weekend or just for the day. Writing challenges will be interspersed with readings, if desired, and exploring the Reserve to find your own special place for dreaming.

Friday – Sunday 25-27  September 2009

Writing Day at Sacred Rocks Reserve is also featured on the Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council Writers’ Workshop blog.

Come shoot the moon with us!

For our guests interested in Astronomy, check out this interesting article. And, if time permits, you might visit Sacred Rocks Reserve on Friday, December 12th for an awesome night sky.

What DOES ’shoot the moon mean’ exactly? I tried to look it up but got no good answers. Do you know?

It’s a Fall Day at Sacred Rocks Reserve – and 73 degrees!

Officially fall, yet, still in the midst of the Santa Ana conditions that blow the desert air over the mountains to the sea. At this time, though, not a breath of air, people are out in shorts and t-shirts, and as long is the sun is out, it just about perfect. The deciduous trees have completed their shedding for the winter. Most of our trees, however, are oak trees. About 95% of our trees are oak, and green all winter AND summer.

What is you weather like at this time of year? Wouldn’t you just love to come for a visit?

How to Make your Business Eco-Friendly Step 1

Old Outdoor World 1972-2003

Old Outdoor World 1972-2003

Imagine a one ton pickup truck AND a 4 cubic yard, and one determined owner along with a myriad of worker-bees, hauling load after load of trash. It was 2003, the RV Park just purchased. Sharon and Dimitri had a dream. The dream was to take care of the land, and to pass it to future generations. There have been challenges and a big one was, TRASH.

From Boulevard to the Miramar Landfill and back there are 140 miles. For years, people around had been using the RV Park 163 acres as a dump site. For whatever reason, they thought it was normal to dump their trash on other people’s land. The new owners put a stop to that. Then the clean-up began.

Each load of TRASH took 1-3 days to load. Behind nearly every group of beautiful trees and big rocks, the trash of years was cleared out. Day after day of sweating, lifting, hauling, loading, and driving and unloading and returning home. More than 80 TONS OF TRASH were hauled off Sacred Rocks Reserve [formerly Outdoor World RV Park]. Appliances, beds, garbage, cans and bottles, old cars, old parts of machines, more garbage, over 500 tires to the recycling company, over 2 tons of steel and aluminum to the recycling plants in National City. Thousands of miles driven.

So when we go out on to the Reserve to check things out, we take a plastic bag with us, to pick up what has blown or been dropped by careless campers. And we encourage everyone to do the same.

Shall we leave this world a better place? I would like to know of other experiences in cleaning up a business, or a home, or land.

Labor Day Weekend Weather – Excellent!

The last holiday and much of August was pretty WARM, but this weekend we are forcasted to be:

Friday 92 degrees Saturday 89 Sunday 86 and Monday 84

As you might know, since it is very dry, this temperature is very pleasant on your skin, especially lounging around under the shady trees.

Oh, by the way, one of our earth friendly offerings is taking water from our pure and deep aquifers and making ice to sell in the Sacred Rocks Convenience Store. If you have tasted regular commercial ice or notice what it does inside your drinks, and THEN taste our ice, you will notice a BIG difference. Our water and ice are both sweet and pure and therefore, beneficial to your body.

Fresh Air

The air at Outdoor World RV Park is still fresh and clean and pure, away from all the smoke of the recent and ongoing fires. I look forward to driving up this Friday for my usual weekend in the mountains. How often do you think ‘I can’t wait to leave San Diego’? Should be a good weekend for a hike to the backcountry. Warm days, a campfire at night, snuggle under the quilts to sleep.
